Surprise Me

About this talk

Shai Shen-Orr is a systems biologist and data scientist who directs the laboratory of Systems Immunology and Precision Medicine at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Check out Shai’s 2017 TEDMED Talk to learn more about the new analytical methods he and his team are using to get a peek inside the “black box” of the immune system and to make getting an “immune system checkup” as commonplace as a cardiovascular checkup.

Shai Shen-Orr is a leading systems biologist and data scientist who uses technology to understand the human immune system. As a professor at the Technion in Israel and the Chief Scientist of CytoReason, he works at the intersection of medicine and artificial intelligence (AI). Shai’s research focuses on developing new computer models of the immune system. These models are like a digital map of how the body’s defenses work, allowing scientists to make predictions from large amounts of biological data. At CytoReason, his company, this technology is used by major pharmaceutical companies to speed up the development of new drugs and personalize treatments for diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders. His research has been widely recognized and is considered foundational in the field of systems immunology. Shai’s work has also shed light on how the immune system changes as a person ages and how to define key signs of a person’s overall immune health. His efforts are helping to create a new kind of medicine that is smarter, faster, and more targeted than ever before.
