About Daniel
Dr. Daniel Kohane is a leading medical doctor and researcher who is transforming the safety and effectiveness of medicine. He is uniquely qualified, holding degrees in both medicine (M.D.) and physiology (Ph.D.), with specialty training in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care. This multidisciplinary background allows him to solve real hospital problems using advanced engineering. He currently works as a Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and a Senior Associate in Pediatric Critical Care at Boston Children’s Hospital. In his biomedical engineering lab, Daniel specializes in nanotechnology and biomaterials . He designs incredibly small, engineered particles to safely carry drugs. The main goal of this work is to make medications more powerful and highly specific, meaning the drugs go exactly where they are needed in the body while avoiding healthy tissue and reducing side effects. His research has led to major breakthroughs, including long-lasting local anesthetics that can provide pain relief for days after surgery, which helps reduce the need for addictive opioid pain medications. Daniel’s work bridges the gap between complex science and patient care, often resulting in life-saving innovations. His passion for problem-solving is evident in all areas of his life—he once even applied his inventive skills to improve the scent of microwave pizza.
