Dr. Nir Barzilai is a renowned physician and aging expert who directs the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. His work focuses on understanding why some people live exceptionally long and healthy lives. Through his research, he has studied the genetics and biology of hundreds of centenarians (people who live to be 100 or older) and their children. His goal is to find ways to help everyone “age later” by extending our years of good health. Nir’s research has led to the development of a major clinical trial called the TAME trial (Targeting Aging with Metformin). This study aims to prove that a common diabetes drug, metformin, can delay the onset of age-related diseases like heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. He believes that if we can target the aging process itself, we can prevent many diseases at once, rather than treating them individually as they appear. In addition to his scientific work, Nir is a passionate public speaker and the author of the book Age Later: Health Span, Life Span, and the New Science of Longevity. He also holds key leadership roles, including Scientific Director of the American Federation for Aging Research. His career, which has taken him from a medic in the Israeli Army to a leading scientist, shows his dedication to improving human health worldwide.
