2015 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion Emtithal “Emi” Mahmoud was born in Sudan and came to the United States in 1998, escaping the Darfur genocide with her family. In Emi’s TEDMED 2016 talk, she shares how poetry has empowered her to share her story and helped her to heal.

Emtithal “Emi” Mahmoud is an award-winning poet and a passionate activist for human rights. Born in Darfur, Sudan, she uses her powerful words to advocate for refugees and other disadvantaged communities around the world. Emi earned the titles of 2015 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and 2016 Woman of the World Co-champion. Her unique background includes studying anthropology and biology at Yale University, which gives her a broad perspective on global issues. She is also the author of the poetry book, Sahar: The last speech of the poet, shehrazad. As a UNHCR High Profile Supporter, she has spoken at numerous United Nations events and has met with world leaders to discuss the refugee crisis. She also participated in White House discussions, including one with President Obama. Through her poems and her constant advocacy, Emi works to bring understanding and support to those who need it most.
