In a Nutshell

About Joshua

Joshua Roman is an internationally acclaimed cellist, composer, and artistic innovator known for bringing classical music to new audiences with exceptional skill and versatility. He began his career at a young age, becoming the Principal Cellist of the Seattle Symphony at just 22, a position he held for two seasons before launching his solo career. Joshua has earned renown for his genre-bending repertoire, which spans from the classics of Bach to contemporary pieces and covers of rock bands like Radiohead. He has performed as a soloist with major orchestras worldwide, including the Los Angeles and San Francisco Symphonies, and his performance with the YouTube Symphony at Carnegie Hall was introduced by Yo-Yo Ma, who called him “one of the great exemplars of the ideal 21st-century musician.” Joshua is deeply committed to using music to connect and heal. His recent and ambitious project, Immunity, is an intimate exploration of his own struggle with Long COVID through a combination of performance and storytelling. The project, which includes a recently released album and concert/dialogues at places like Juilliard and the Oslo Freedom Forum, features his own compositions alongside works by other artists, showcasing music’s restorative power. Beyond the concert hall, Joshua has always used his music for outreach, performing in refugee camps and HIV clinics in Uganda. He plays an 1830 Giovanni Francesco Pressenda cello, currently on loan through The Stradivari Society of Chicago.
