Manhattan Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal didn’t set out to be a period rights activist. But when she learned that menstrual hygiene products weren’t worthy of tax-free status, but that fruit roll-up snacks were, she made it her mission to eliminate the “tampon tax.” Watch Linda’s 2017 TEDMED Talk to learn more about her work to bring menstrual health into the mainstream of public dialogue.

Linda B. Rosenthal is a leading New York State Assembly member and a champion for social justice and public health. Representing Manhattan’s 67th district, she has passed over 75 laws to improve the lives of New Yorkers. She is a national leader in menstrual equity. Her landmark bill to ban the “tampon tax” made New York one of the first states to eliminate the sales tax on menstrual hygiene products. She has also successfully passed laws to provide these products freely in schools, prisons, and shelters. In addition to her work on gender equity, she is a strong advocate for a wide range of issues. She is the Chair of the Committee on Housing, where she has worked to protect tenants. She has also passed important laws related to animal welfare, including a ban on the sale of certain dogs from pet stores. Linda has secured funding for addiction prevention and treatment and has been a vocal supporter of legislation for safer consumption sites. Her career is defined by her commitment to fighting for the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities.
