Kelly Thomas, PhD is a member of the TEDMED Team, and brings a unique cross-disciplinary perspective to her work. Kelly received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from NYU. Her doctoral research spanned structural biology, oncology, and therapeutics. During her postdoctoral studies at Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, she investigated the stem cell niche in acute myeloid leukemia.
Beyond biomedical research, Kelly is an accomplished science communicator with extensive experience in grant writing, medical research articles, and science-focused content. She has also lent her expertise to biotechnology investing, patent strategy, medical device marketing, and health and medical writing.
Outside of work, Kelly is passionate about health and fitness. She loves cooking for her family, earning the affectionate nickname “Mom’s Kitchen” from her kids. She enjoys playing board games, sports, and taking long walks with her kids, husband, and their Cavapoo. A lifelong athlete, she continues to compete in tennis, valuing both the physical challenge and the sense of community it fosters.
