Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia is an internationally renowned scientist, physician, and engineer who is revolutionizing medicine using “tiny technologies.” She holds the prestigious title of Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she directs a lab focused on adapting computer chip technology for biological problems. Sangeeta’s groundbreaking work involves creating miniature living systems, often called “micro-livers” or “organs-on-chips,” which are used to quickly and safely test new drugs and understand disease development. Her inventions also include highly affordable diagnostic tools designed to detect diseases like cancer and infectious agents, making essential medical tests accessible even in low-income settings worldwide. Committed to ensuring her scientific ideas reach patients, Sangeeta and her students have launched more than ten successful biotechnology companies. Her dedication to innovation and advocacy for women in science has earned her the highest accolades, including the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation and the esteemed Kyoto Prize (2023).
