AI Health Pioneer Suchi Saria tells us that data is all around us. Together with machine learning, data can save more lives. Another critical recommendation has to do with policy and financial incentives. It is not enough for technology to merely show that it improves patient outcomes. Suchi reminds us that for critical adoption of life saving technologies, these technologies must align with financial incentives for healthcare organizations.

About Suchi
Dr. Suchi Saria is a leading AI expert and a pioneer in the field of health AI. She holds a John C. Malone endowed chair at Johns Hopkins University, where her research focuses on using machine learning to solve critical problems in medicine. Several important new inventions designed for the improvement of patient care have resulted from her research. One of her groundbreaking achievements was demonstrating how machine learning could be used for the early detection of sepsis, a life-threatening medical condition. This research was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine in 2015. She also showed that readily available sensors could be used to easily track and measure the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease at home, which helps doctors manage treatment more effectively. This work was published in JAMA Neurology in 2018. Suchi is also the founder of Bayesian Health, a company that aims to transform healthcare by giving doctors and health systems real-time access to important clinical insights. For her innovative contributions, she has received numerous honors, including being named a Sloan Research Fellow, a National Academy of Medicine Emerging Leader, and one of MIT Technology Review’s “35 Innovators Under 35”.
