About Niamh O'Hara

Niamh O'Hara has developed cutting edge next-gen sequencing-based technology for hospitals and spent five years commercializing this technology, through co-founding and leading Biotia. She has conducted unprecedented, large-scale metagenomics studies including characterizing the microbiome of ambulances across the US, hospital environments internationally, and clinical studies on patient samples. She completed a postdoc in healthtech business at Cornell Tech, a postdoc at Fordham University in Bioinformatics, a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Stony Brook University, and a BA at NYU. Dr. O'Hara has published peer-reviewed articles in the fields of metagenomics, genomics, evolutionary biology and ecology in top ranked journals such as Molecular Ecology, Microbiome, and Evolution. Her work has been featured in GenomeWeb, Popular Science, the Huffington Post, and WIRED.

About This Idea

Biotia leverages Genomics and AI to Provide Diagnostic Insights. Current infectious disease diagnostic tools are failing us. Culturing, the current gold standard and technology from the 1800s, misses many important pathogens and requires many labor intensive tests. Newer PCR-based tests are limited, problematic and don’t provide drug resistance information. The result is high levels of mortality and drug resistance. At Biotia, we fight infectious disease and drug resistance using rapid precision diagnostics. We work with hospitals internationally, leveraging next-generation DNA sequencing, and our artificial intelligence software to guide patient treatment and save lives.
