Company Profile:

3Derm Systems, Inc.

3Derm is a cost-effective skin imaging system that allows any user to take clinical-quality 3D images of concerning skin lesions and upload them instantly for review by a dermatologist. We implement our technology within accountable care organizations (ACOs) as a triage system, allowing primary care physicians to use our handheld imager in their clinics and send images via cloud to an in-network dermatologist for review - ensuring those with alarming conditions are seen as soon as possible.

Entrepreneur Profile:

Liz Asai
CEO
Liz studied biomedical engineering at Yale University, where she served as director of Yale Demos, a volunteer program that performs science experiments in underprivileged elementary schools, and was elected publisher of the Yale Scientific, the oldest college science publication in the nation. In her spare time, Liz worked with classmates on independent projects funded by the engineering department – including a laparoscopic surgical probe. In order to enter an innovation challenge in 2011, the team designed a 3D imager to help detect skin cancer. To test the device, Liz served as principal investigator of a clinical study conducted at the Yale School of Medicine. In 2012, Liz co-founded 3Derm Systems, Inc. With Liz as CEO, 3Derm was chosen as one of 10 teams to participate in the Healthbox Boston 2013 startup incubator, and won the Innovator’s Award at the accelerator’s demo day in June. To date, the team has been awarded over $350,000 in grants and awards. Liz was featured in Boston’s 25 Under 25, and currently serves as the youngest principal investigator of a National Science Foundation SBIR grant.

Entrepreneur Profile:

Elliot Swart
CTO
Elliot Swart studied computer science and electrical engineering at Yale University, though his computer science education began at the age of eight, programming in Logo. Elliot’s research background includes gene therapy work at the Khavari dermatology lab and biologically inspired machine-learning research in the STAIR Lab, both at Stanford University. He also conducted research at Johns Hopkins’ Thakor Lab studying methods to make smart prosthetics more reliable and easier to use. In 2011, he formed an undergraduate engineering team that designed a 3D skin imager to allow for efficient skin monitoring. Elliot led the team to a 1st place finish in the Collegiate Inventors Competition and served as lead author on a 3D teledermatology patent. Since co-founding 3Derm Systems in 2012, Elliot has served as CTO, architecting and developing a scalable, high-security platform for the transmission of dermatology images, as well as overseeing the development of the next generation 3D imager.
