Graphium Health

Graphium Health was founded by a team of private practice physicians, skilled enterprise level software architects, and proven private sector business intelligence experts who understand the business and information needs of medicine. Our highly-configurable, mobile and web based platform focuses on the highest acuity healthcare vertical: Peri-Operative Medicine. Our mission is to make individual health providers be the best they can be – by developing technology that fits effortlessly into organizations’ pre-existing workflows while providing real-time, mobile, self-guided, and comparative analytics of quality and performance. By simplifying the collection, analysis and delivery of clinical, operational and educational data for physicians, administrators, and patients, we make each individual’s data accessible and meaningful. We provide perspective and context tailored to each individual’s unique needs, enabling the providers and the hospitals to make the most intelligent decisions possible and engaging the patient to make them more active participants. Graphium Health was founded to make the individual better and health care organizations smarter. Ultimately, we empower the individual to meaningfully improve themselves. We believe a more informed, more engaged framework that leverages cloud computing and mobile form factors can disrupt and transform an antiquated healthcare system.

Q: Please tell us how your business idea was conceived. Was there an "aha" moment or did it evolve gradually?

A: In many ways, healthcare is simply behind the technology curve. We can train a person’s immune system to specifically target their cancer, and we may soon be able to grow patient specific organs. We’re really smart certain places, but we’re also really challenged elsewhere. As our capability to diagnose and treat continues to improve, the cost to distribute and scale these interventions is crushing their promise.

For over 10 years, I trained in these inefficient systems and grew frustrated by the lost potential realized in other industries. Intelligent IT solutions already proven in retail and finance have the ability to dramatically reduce our costs, making innovative treatment more available to more people.

After a fellowship in bioinformatics, I founded Graphium Health to realize my belief there existed a smarter, more efficient way to practice medicine with a more informed, more engaged framework leveraging cloud computing and mobile form factors.

Q: What's the most inventive, innovative, or disruptive aspect of your initiative?

A: Graphium Health uses point-of-care, mobile data-capture and real-time, mobile data-sharing and analysis to make providers more individually insightful, hospitals more intelligent, and patients more informed. We use mobile technology and cloud computing to make data collection intuitive and natural. We make data sharing between players of the healthcare team intelligent, meaningful, and real-time. We make data analysis distributed, self-guided, and comparative. And we do all of this at a fraction of the cost of today’s vendors.

Leveraging cloud computing and mobile technology to connect the healthcare team with their shared data in a natural, meaningful way, our solution empowers each member of the Peri-Operative team - the provider, administrator, and patient - to individually improve themselves, thereby transforming our healthcare system from within.

Q: How will it help people live to their greatest potential or contribute to making the world healthier?

A: Healthcare data is just as heterogeneous as the expertise of those on the healthcare team. Physicians, administrators, and patients all have very different needs, different understandings, different responsibilities. Today’s IT solutions fail to account for this difference and instead focus on solutions built around a single player, either the provider or perhaps the patient.

These solutions require duplicated effort, expensive post-experience analysis, and provide little opportunity for the individual to improve themselves - whether the physician or the patient - in a convenient, meaningful way. This results in a disengaged patient overwhelmed with unorganized information, a healthcare provider frustrated with their lack of an ability to measure and improve their practice, and a hospital struggling to better measure and improve processes. We connect the patient, the provider, and the administrator with their shared data, empowering each individual with new opportunity for improvement and more intelligent engagement.

Q: Five years from now, what would you like to be able to say has been your most important contribution to health?

A: We’ve empowered the individual provider, the individual patient, and the individual hospital administrator with the opportunity to improve themselves. We’ve engaged them with their data - independent of perception - making them active participants in the continuous improvement process whether mandated by federal, state, or local regulation or desired out of a personal conviction to take ownership of their personal health.

Q: What single word or phrase best describes the culture of your startup and why?

A: Depth…not only are we deep in data, we are deep in knowledge of the healthcare system. By bringing together practicing providers and proven enterprise technologists, we believe we can implement solutions that both take advantage of the greatest advances in technology and do so in a way that allows healthcare providers to do what they do best: heal. Our tools surface information - information that has been buried deep in mounds of paper and carbon copies - and makes it searchable, insightful, and valuable to those who need it the most.

Jeff Zavaleta, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Fellowship trained in Bioinformatics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiologists, Jeff brings a refreshing dedication to developing electronic tools to help clinical practices. As a private- practice pediatric anesthesiologist, he intimately understands the need for vigilant patient focus, consistent speed, and unfailing focus on patient safety. His background as an objected-oriented programmer himself allows him to more easily translate clinical use cases to the professional system engineers and architects, resulting in innovative solutions designed for the way physicians actually practice. His driving passion is to leverage technology to improve patient safety and satisfaction, improve efficiency, and lower costs. Healthcare is a limited resource, and the more affordable, more efficient, more safely it's distributed, the more people who will have access to it.
