Patients benefit by receiving high quality and compassionate urgent care in the comfort of their own home in under two hours from specially trained and certified doctors. For physicians, Medicast's Virtual Practice manages all backoffice functions including scheduling, medical charting and records, and all billing. Established in early 2013, Medicast is a StartUp Health and Techstars company. The founding team behind Medicast have experience working at Google, Sprint, Nokia, NIH, CDC, and JPMorgan Chase.

Q: What single word or phrase best describes the culture of your startup and why?

A: Service. We believe the highest calling for an individual or a company is to serve the needs of others. A culture of service compels us to build amazing products, deliver the best possible healthcare experiences, and leverage technology to bring people closer together and make life easier.

Q: What's the most inventive, innovative, or disruptive aspect of your initiative?

A: Medicast is transforming the traditional brick-and-mortar doctor’s office into a mobile experience for physicians and patients. We combine a “virtual practice” suite for physicians with the direct primary care business model that ensures that patients benefit from quality and compassionate care, while letting doctors focus on delivering amazing health care. Medicast delivers old-school medicine using 21st century technology.

Q: Please tell us how your business idea was conceived. Was there an "aha" moment or did it evolve gradually?

A: Medicast was born out of frustration with the difficulties of seeing a physician and getting great, compassionate care. Over the past year, the idea of home-based wellness has gained momentum and we are at the forefront of companies using technology to reimagine health care.

Q: How will it help people live to their greatest potential or contribute to making the world healthier?

A: All too often, people avoid getting the medical care they need because it is difficult or inconvenient to get to a doctor. Medicast helps people get and stay healthy by bringing care providers to the home and ensuring that people can access healthcare when and where it’s most needed. There are numerous benefits to home-based care: physicians can spend quality time with patients in a comfortable setting; and they can take into account environmental, social, and nutritional factors while addressing the patient’s medical needs. Health happens at home, and Medicast uses technology to make home-based care possible at scale.

Q: Five years from now, what would you like to be able to say has been your most important contribution to health?

A: Medicast wants to fundamentally change the way patients receive healthcare, and the way doctors provide it. We want to be known as the company that strengthened the relationships between patients and caregivers.
