MediSprout redefines the way Healthcare Providers and Patients communicate beginning with a simple, versatile, online telehealth solution that goes beyond creating a virtual medical visit. Once connected, there are a variety of clinical tools and apps that can be used before, during or after the visit to allow Patient and Provider to interact and understanding like never before. This creates a level of efficiency, engagement and productivity that can even surpass that of a typical office visit. While our method of connecting through interactive video is amazingly simple and integrated, we view this as a way to access the point of care between Provider and Patient. This opens up a world of possibilities, from affecting the clinical conversation and ultimately the overall clinical outcome, to data accumulation for various purposes. With so many forces at play redefining Healthcare from diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and data collection, combined with ever increasing Patient autonomy, there needs to be an interface between the Provider and Patient that is sophisticated enough to assist in creating actionable medical advice - MediSprout.

Q: What single word or phrase best describes the culture of your startup and why?

A: Crisp. It reflects our culture of staying invigorated, being self-motivated, and looking for novel, fresh solutions to problems that have been embedded for too long. It also reflects our approach to changing mindsets towards large problems, and the fact that we are decisive and calculated, rather than scattered. We like being crisp.

Q: Five years from now, what would you like to be able to say has been your most important contribution to health?

A: While we want to transform the way patients access medical care and how providers visualize healthcare delivery, in five years we want to be well on our way to creating an online access point for every medical practice in the country. Access to your local provider would promote continuity of care. We then want to make that clinical interaction as interactive, efficient, and productive as possible. Bridging this gap in communication through online access and interactive tools, resources, and apps will assist providers in conveying relevant medical information to their patients in a way that involves them. We can create more involved patients who can take advantage of the autonomy they have and more productive providers who can more effectively and efficiently institute their medical knowledge. Taken together, this is a powerful way to reach our ultimate goal of more meaningful healthcare that leads to more effective outcomes and better health. Through access, better quality information, and greater involvement we can change the way people take care of themselves.

Q: How will it help people live to their greatest potential or contribute to making the world healthier?

A: With greater, more convenient access to--as well as more productive interaction with--their healthcare providers, people will be incentivized to be more compliant and empowered to take care of their own health. Many of the treatments and recommendations made by providers today are involved and often not understood by patients. Creating a forum of communication that is not only convenient but interactive, can lead to better patient care, thereby creating a healthier world.

Q: What's the most inventive, innovative, or disruptive aspect of your initiative?

A: The most inventive aspect of our initiative is our new telehealth API.  We now offer our simple, secure, virtual medical visit to third-party healthcare innovators. Our virtual medical visit can now be added to your EMR, Patient Portal, or Provider Discovery application with ease. This is only the start. As we continue to add more medically specific features to our solution, we are opening up our platform to third-party healthcare IT developers who wish to engage the patient, collect data, and coordinate care before, during, or after the medical visit. 

Q: Please tell us how your business idea was conceived. Was there an "aha" moment or did it evolve gradually?

A: The idea behind MediSprout was a product of my clinical experience working as a physician for over 10 years. As I grew as a clinician and was able to define those aspects of healthcare that were important to me, I realized that I most valued my ability to easily and regularly communicate with my patients. I began searching for an existing medical communication tool but found none. This led to the "aha" moment when I decided to build a solution to fill this gap.

Randy is an Engineer and Entrepreneur who has developed and sold two prior companies, ­​one in the Department of Defense space and another to AccuWeather. He has a passion for building successful business models and the technology that powers them. Randy loves solving hard problems and creating new innovative products that push the boundaries of change. He earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland and his M.S. degree in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University. Randy was born and raised in Maryland but now lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two kids. When he’s not coding, Randy enjoys skiing and mountain biking.

Samant Virk, MD

Samant is a Physician who has been practicing for over 10 years in the field of Neurology and Interventional Spine. After developing his own successful Practice and being motivated by personal experiences, Samant wanted to address some of the daily inefficiencies in medical care he had experienced. He felt that because of these gaps in care that were accepted as status quo, he was not able to deliver the best possible care to his Patients. This led to the development of MediSprout. While he still has a passion for practicing medicine he has found an outcropping of that passion through which he is committed to making broader change in the field he cares so much about. Originally from upstate New York, Samant is a life-long New Yorker and currently lives in New York City with his wife and two kids.
