Moov

Moov is dedicated to helping you improve the quality of your everyday workout. By combining artificial intelligence and gameplay into a first-of-its-kind wearable device, Moov is fitness training taken to the next level. Advanced motion sensors read your body’s movement while Moov syncs with your smartphone apps to give you real-time feedback and coaching instructions that can make workouts more effective, efficient, and fun in real-time.

Q: Please tell us how your business idea was conceived. Was there an "aha" moment or did it evolve gradually?

A: Rooted in our own experience, we developed Moov to see, understand, and change how we move. I injured myself while cycling last summer with repetitive improper movements and that’s when I examined my workout routine: am I exercising right? There’s science behind every workout. The quality matters as much as the quantity. At the time, I was collaborating with Nikola, a software genius, and Tony, a hardware guru, to expand on our deep understanding of sensor technology and it came to us - a wearable coach powered by precision motion capture and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.).

The timing was perfect. Sensor technology was affordable, smaller in size and we could gather sports science research from Harvard and University of Cape Town to understand the biomechanics for different exercises. Our crowdfunding campaign raised $1,000,000 in 15 days. Moov changes the way people workout and the world is ready for that.

Q: What's the most inventive, innovative, or disruptive aspect of your initiative?

A: There is an abundance of fitness trackers in the market right now, but they are rudimentary pedometers that only provide data (often times, inaccurate) without meaning. Moov is not just asking you to move more, but telling you how to move better. Moov is disrupting this industry space by bringing fitness wearables into the next generation. Using 9-axis sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer) Moov is able to capture your 3-dimensional motion data and give you feedback in real-time during your workout. No other device can accurately measure your body’s rich biomechanics and give you immediate feedback on how to get better. This breakthrough technology doesn’t have to be confined to fitness apps, which is why we’re planning to open our SDK to developers. We envision applications and games being powered by movement.

Q: How will it help people live to their greatest potential or contribute to making the world healthier?

A: A myriad of studies have shown that there is a growing obesity problem in the world. The problem is deeply rooted, but one factor is that people don’t know how to exercise properly. Those who can afford to might hire a personal fitness coach. But what about everyone else? And even a coach cannot effectively evaluate a client's exercises 24/7.

Moov is an affordable device that helps beginners as well as experts make the most out of each workout, whether the goal is to get in shape, train for a marathon, or feel better. Moov will enable users to maximize their workouts and avoid injuries with real-time coaching based on an individual's movements during each exercise. Moov can change the way professional athletes train, how physical rehabilitation works, and more.

Q: Five years from now, what would you like to be able to say has been your most important contribution to health?

A: Putting an end to the inefficient workout.

We envision Moov changing the way people exercise by helping them learn, remember, and improve with every movement. Moov is made for everyone. Beginners will be confident in knowing that they are practicing proper form and be encouraged to keep going. Advanced users will have access to in-depth analyses of their workouts that enable them to push themselves further. Physical therapists, fitness coaches, and other health professionals can use Moov to better understand and treat their clients. Moov will do what no other fitness wearable can do today: turn your data into actionable insights.

Q: What single word or phrase best describes the culture of your startup and why?

A: Dynamic.

We’re always iterating, always changing, and always progressing. Moov is about reflecting on your current movement and implementing meaningful changes to improve. We believe in what Moov does and our culture and employees reflect that. We’re always testing the limits of Moov and pushing its boundaries to create a truly amazing product.

Meng Li is a hustler, a designer and an entrepreneur. She is obsessed with robots and making robots human. She started her career as an industrial designer, winning both international design awards as well as grass-root clients from the lean hardware movements in Shenzhen. She was drawn into Human Computer Interaction after working with some of the brightest minds at Microsoft Research. While at Microsoft, she and her team built a motion gaming device similar to an iPad Mini even before the iPhone was born. She left Beijing for New York where she was able to experiment physical computing, wearable tech and robotics at ITP, the “Center of Recently Possible” in NYU. She moved on to design mobile products for Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer soon after. Her last stop – Silicon Valley to become a design entrepreneur where she co founded a web startup Clipular.com before starting Moov – the most successful crowdfunded fitness wearable device ever. When Meng gets some time, she enjoys all sorts of sports: swimming, basketball, cardio boxing, weight lifting...
