Progress achieved in the Great Challenges Program since its launch at TEDMED 2012, catalyzed conversation in the RWJF space. After eight months of Google Hangouts,  robust online discussions, and carefully curated Storify collations, the entire TEDMED community had the opportunity to review and weigh in on the progress made and the next steps to be taken towards conquering the 20 Great Challenges in Health and Medicine.

ENGAGE
Following the last session at TEDMED 2013, Delegates were invited to Great Challenges Day at George Washington University sponsored by RWJF. The event kicked off with a plea to recognize the inherent value stories that lie behind the data generated over the course of the Great Challenges Program. Primed in the spirit of telling stories to save lives, 20 challenge teams gathered for a bit of viral community-building and some hands-on exploration and discovery. The discussion was lively, both on site, online and through social media channels.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

As the nation's largest philanthropy devoted solely to the public's health, we have a unique capability and responsibility to confront the most pressing health and health care problems threatening our society. Our efforts focus on improving both the health of everyone in America and their health care—how it's delivered, how it's paid for, and how well it does for patients and their families. As we invest in improving systems through which people receive care and in fostering environments that promote health and prevent disease and injury, we expect to achieve comprehensive, meaningful, and timely change.

We are guided by a fundamental premise: we are stewards of private funds that must be used in the public's interest. Our greatest asset isn't our endowment; it's the way we help create leverage for change.

We create leverage by building evidence and producing, synthesizing and distributing knowledge, new ideas, and expertise. We harness the power of partnerships by bringing together key players, collaborating with colleagues, and securing the sustained commitment of other funders and advocates to improve the health and health care of all Americans.

The California Endowment is a private, statewide health foundation with a mission to build a stronger state by expanding access to affordable, quality health care to underserved communities and improving the overall health of all Californians.

Health Happens Here is the core of our work. It challenges us to think about people's heath beyond the doctor's office and beyond the good vs. bad choices people make. In reality, our health happens where we live, learn, work and play—in neighborhoods, schools, and with prevention.

The California Endowment was established in 1996 as a result of Blue Cross of California's creation of its for-profit subsidiary, WellPoint Health Networks. Since then, we've invested in health broadly, from strengthening the safety net for families struggling with poverty to diversifying the health care workforce.

The lessons learned from early investments were the genesis for Health Happens Here and the 10-year, $1 billion Building Healthy Communities plan, in which residents in 14 places are working to transform their neighborhoods.
