Health and Medicine's Great Challenges
TEDMED is working to bring attention and greater understanding to the Great Challenges of health and medicine: giant social-medical problems such as childhood obesity, the caregiver crisis, the changing role of the patient, and many more.
These complex problems have dozens of interlocking causes and overlapping effects. As a result, these issues are not susceptible to simple cures, magic bullets or “one-size-fits-all” solutions.
The mission of TEDMED’s Great Challenges Program, then, is not to solve these problems. Instead, we propose to provide America and the world with an unbiased view of these challenges, incorporating thoughtful perspectives from all sectors of society.
TEDMED believes that only such broad-based understanding can set the stage for truly effective action.
In April 2012, the TEDMED community will vote on which Challenges are most pressing and should be embraced first. Year-round, multi-disciplinary teams of scientists will participate in a series of live Web chats about each Challenge.
These conversations will be shared with the world for free online and through downloadable podcasts.
